Frontera: Views of the U.S.-Mexico Border photography exhibition @ National Gallery of Canada
Apr 2 all day

Frontera brings together seven contemporary photographers’ views of a highly topical subject: the border separating Mexico and the United States. Made between 1997 and 2017, the works question the very notion of borders, attempt to define their edges, and explore their representation. Images by Mexicans Pablo López Luz and Alejandro Cartagena dialogue with works by Canadians Mark Ruwedel and Geoffrey James, Swiss Adrien Missika, American Kirsten Luce and German Daniel Schwarz.

Frontera is organized by the Canadian Photography Institute and developed in collaboration with the FotoMexico festival.

Gold and Silver photography exhibition @ National Gallery of Canada
Apr 2 all day

Through captivating and largely unedited images ranging from scenes of California’s rivers to the snow-capped peaks of Yukon, this exhibition follows the hopes, dreams and illusions of an entire generation of prospectors who took to the road in search of gold. It also tells the story of two major developments in the history of photography: single images on metal and multiple images on glass and paper.

Gold and Silver is organized by the Canadian Photography Institute in partnership with Library and Archives Canada. This exhibition was made possible thanks to the gift of The Origins of Photography from the Archive of Modern Conflict.

Gabor Szilasi: The Art World in Montreal 1960-1980 photography exhibition @ McCord Museum
Apr 29 all day

This exhibition of unpublished photographs by Gabor Szilasi features images from art openings and other artistic events held in Montreal between 1960 and 1980. Shot in a spontaneous documentary style, they immortalize the people, places and vitality of Montreal’s art scene at a time of social and cultural upheaval. Although Szilasi is one of Quebec’s best-known living photographers, this significant aspect of his work has never been publicly displayed.
